Eat a delicious mangosteen.
Relatively unavailable in the US until recently, we first tasted the mangosteen while in the Vietnam countryside, and I’ve been keeping an eye out for the things ever since. With its thick pomegranate-like shell, a meaty interior resembling an orange crossed with a peeled grape, and a unique sweet with a touch of sour taste, the mangosteen would sit near the top of my favorite fruits list, were I to compile a list of favorite fruits.
At long last, the local 99 Ranch received a shipment (selling for $6.99/lb), and I snatched up a couple pounds worth last night. Damn these things are good.
Forget the miracle fruit nonsense, as you wouldn’t be eating the rind anyway and the nutritional content of the meat really isn’t anything special, but do dine on one if given the chance.
And, in preparation for that potential partaking: how to enjoy a mangosteen.
RetroCity
A recent addition to my subscribed podcast list is RetroCity, a new retro gaming podcast by IGN’s Levi Buchanan. A mix between the esoteric and well-trodden, each episode runs 15-20 minutes and covers a small segment of gaming history, its music, and collecting retro.
Contrary to most gaming podcasts out there, Levi produces the show with minimal conjecture, a dollop of nostalgia, and a calm, NPR-like quality, speaking directly to the retro gaming nerd without pandering to the mainstream. If you’re the sort of person who collects Rob Hubbard tracks and remembers the early days of EA with fondness, or if you’re of the younger generation wondering why all the old guys even care about this stuff, give it a listen.
Them!
The last time I saw Them! was over 20 years ago, so heading into this I wasn’t expecting much more than 50’s camp. But after last night, I’ve gotta admit: for a movie about giant ants invading LA, Them! was surprisingly solid.
Setup, just beyond the Fremont Street Experience on 3rd Street. Behind the first cluster of chairs were a handful of Cadillacs, followed by more chairs, Red Bull cars and free refreshments. Not really a drive-in at all, but still fun.
Attendance was great and all the seats were full. It attracted quite a bit of attention; people would wander over from Fremont and watch the movie from the sidelines for a few minutes at a time until shooed away by security guards.
Here’s hoping that the show was enough of a success to carry the idea beyond Cinevegas. I’d love to see them continue this monthly, either here or better yet, in collaboration with the Las Vegas Drive-In.
See Them! tonight on Fremont St
For the Vegas locals out there, don’t forget that tonight is the Cinevegas screening of 1954’s colossal killer ant classic, Them!.
Join me at the mock drive-in, set up just off the Fremont St Experience. The Neonopolis garage is probably the best place to park for the night.
Fremont St and 3rd St
9:00 PM tonight
Tickets are on sale at the Cinevegas Box Office at the Palms, and the screening is expected to sell out. Unfortunately, there’s no way to get these tickets online, but there will be shuttle service from the Palms to the screening location.
